If you look north from Seattle on a map, you will find groups of islands all the way to Canada. An hour and a half drive from that same large city will get you to Anacortes and a ferry that will meander thru 180 to 480 islands, the San Juan’s. Walk or drive on and you’re in an artists’ paradise. No matter what the weather, quiet in the mist, or sunny and sparkling, the greens are limitless in variety and each new look has possibilities.
Here is an inland sea with salt water, whales, and fishing boats. Small towns, almost villages, climb up from the water and disappear into the forest and farmland. Points of land jut out with red barked trees and old grandfather rocks warning you to stay further back.
Stop in Friday Harbor for a few days and explore. The town has wonderful food, excellent lodging, rental transportation, and a fascinating harbor.
Roche Harbor, at the other end of the island, might almost be the opposite in speed of living, but just as friendly. Great hiking trails with rare views go off in all directions and you’re a small hop from Canada.
Come look and the inspiration is free.
